Unsettling Ourselves with Vera Dyck

May 22, 2023 at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EDT

$10 – $20

Unsettling Ourselves – Writing to spend time together in blind spots inherent to growing up in white bodies.

This affinity group workshop seeks to co-create a Brave Space – for new awareness of both cognitive assumptions and visceral sensations related to race/ colonization. It gathers writers who because of our skin colour have the privilege of existing within colonizing white culture. Since unconsciousness privilege results in (often unintentional) harm to those without that particular privilege, and since changed behaviour depends on more than new ideas, attention will be given to the emotional and bodily levels of learning.

We will use AWA’s tried and true practices for building community in a nonjudgmental manner. Ideas and practices for aligning intentions and our impact regarding our white privilege will be offered. Writing to prompts that center us in unsettling topics will probably not be easy or fun, yet may assist us to move our actions in the direction of doing less harm and growing more muscle for righting colonial racism’s wrongs in daily living.  This shared learning can help us become a little less fragile, better able to hear the upset and anger of those we unintentionally and unconsciously harm, less isolated in our shame, better able to respond thoughtfully to guilt, and more capable of addressing power imbalances in our human family. All will be invited, but not required, to share their writing within the safety of a Brave Space committed to hearing, accepting, and encouraging one another as we grow together and learn to land.

Vera Dyck has been practicing psychotherapy in Guelph, ON, Canada for 2 decades. In recent years she has shifted her focus to AWA writing groups, decolonizing and anti-racism learning, home and family, bike-riding, gardening, and community building, along with some consulting and training (Internal Family Systems, and complex trauma). She is a kindergartner in antiracism/decolonizing practices, with a lifetime of learning ahead of her. She offers this workshop in part to continue her own practice of unsettling and to grow her capacity to land.
