Storytelling for Academics with Matthew Curlewis

May 17, 2023 at 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

$10 – $20

Although you’re perhaps familiar with writing nonfiction works that adhere to academia’s formal conventions, do you sometimes feel there’s more you’d like to say? Or that you’d like to say things differently, but don’t know how or where to start? Using craft techniques from fiction, Storytelling for Academics brings you out beyond the strictures of academic nonfiction, into a safe, supportive environment where you’ll explore new story potentials in your research and source materials, and in the process, brighten and enliven your writing.

As an academic you know how to write, you’re used to writing, and you have something to say. Perhaps you’ve also wondered how to reach broader audiences, outside of regular academic channels? Through use of the AWA method, this workshop will show you ways of bringing some playful notions into your writing, so you have access to more possibilities for your work, including essays, talks, poems, screenplays, and stories of fiction or creative non-fiction. And – spoiler alert – you might even (re)discover joy in the process of writing itself.

This 10-week workshop has been designed specifically for researchers, scholars, and teaching professors in universities or higher education institutes. But for the purposes of Write Around the World, you do not need to have any current university affiliation.

Dynamic, fun and insightful. The multiple classes I took with Matthew were some of the highlights of a jam packed Write Around the World 2022, where I took as many classes as possible — sometimes multiple daily. I’ve sampled many, I highly recommend!
